Mean machines that let you sit just 12 inches from the ground, mini choppers are everywhere these days ? and it?s not just the kids who are driving them all. Mini choppers seem to be the latest craze to hit the young and adults alike as more and more adult racers zoom down the street, looking all serious about it with a twinkle in their eye.

So, what are mini choppers? Well, if you were to take a modern custom built bike and scale it down with the seat sitting just a few inches from the ground, you have what is known as the mini chopper. These bikes are generally made with 1? steel tube which is welded and bent to get the desired shape. Mini choppers have smaller engines, about 50cc to 110 cc four stroke. However, you can get electric models also. Sometimes, other engines are also fitted into these miniature creations. For instance, you could have small motorcycle engines or dirt bike engines inside these. But the beauty of these choppers is that they look good, almost like a ,000+ creation!

Mini choppers first burst on to the scene in the late 1960s. They became popular mainly because they were easy to make and if manufactured properly, are almost indestructible. The modern versions of mini choppers look like real motor bikes. Many of these come with upgrade kits that allow you to bring up the power of the engine to 200cc or more. So, riders can enjoy great speeds on a steel frame that looks as thin and wiry as a bicycle frame, sitting precariously a few inches above the ground!

It must be remembered that although mini choppers are a craze among those who love to speed down freeways, few states allow you to own or register a chopper, legally. These bikes with their thin frames and low seats are not the best for off-roading either. However, mini choppers are really inexpensive and they look stunning on the road. There are quite a few riders who have hopped through loopholes and managed to get their mini choppers licensed.

Anyone over the age of 13 may ride mini choppers. Riding mini choppers require some amount of expertise and a lot of discretion. It is important to keep the chopper in good condition. When you take your beast for a ride, wear protective gear. These bikes are best suited for day time driving because when your eye is level with the bumper of the SUV in front of you, it is almost imperative to rule out night time driving. Mini choppers are best suited for areas that are smooth and free of obstructions. They are built for a single person only. Lastly, although the bike looks delicate, the rider must never underestimate the power of the beast!
