Chopper Kits

There are three basic types of chopper kits that you can buy. The chopper kit that changes your stock motorcycle into a chopper, a complete chopper kit that includes everything you need to build a custom chopper and  rolling chassis motorcycles, which generally include a frame with a front end and a set of wheels and handle bars.

The bolt on kits. Most die hard chopper fans wouldn't be caught dead with a bike with a bolt on chopper kit. Some claim they just look too hideous while others claim they do not make true choppers. The most popular of these kits are from Seeger Cycle which offers a variety of available rakes and fork tube lengths. I have mixed feelings about these. On some makes of bikes they really don't look too bad. On others they are the kiss of death.

Complete chopper kits are offered not only by kit bike companies but also by the larger production chopper companies such as Big Bear Choppers. The main appeal of the complete chopper kits is obvious: price. If you're building what in the end will be a $30,000 custom motorcycle you can usually pick up the complete kit for only around $20,000. That's enough of a savings that even small shops can turn a profit on these chopper kits.

The kit bikes lose their profitability/ money savings value though the cheaper the kit is. Generally less expensive kits built around Sportster engines sell for almost as much as you would pay for a completed Sportster based chopper.

For the man who really wants to do most of the work himself we have the rolling chassis. Rolling chassis motorcycles allow the builder to create his own one of a kind motor and transmission setup and in some kits his own tank and fenders. Options vary from roller to roller with some companies offering all the sheet metal included while other only sell the frame, the front end and some rims.
